More info on the Knight’s Trail

The soon-to-be-colourful models were dropped off at various locations across the city earlier this year ready to be painted and decorated ahead of their unveiling later this year.

It follows 2015s Lincoln Charter Barons’ Trail which boosted tourism as well as raising £167,000 for charity by installing statues across the city.

The Knights’ Trail is bigger than the barons’, with 35 sculptures planned for various locations in the city from May 20 to September 30.

Lincoln BIG chief executive Matt Corrigan said:

“It is a challenge following the huge success of the barons and because we will have 35 this time, we hope it means more people will be able to explore hidden gems in the city as well as inspire people to explore more of its history.

Any artist can put forward ideas. Sponsors may be looking for something particular for their knight or they may see an artists’ work, like the style and feel of it.

The knights are coming to Lincoln and it is our artists who will bring them alive.”

The 800th anniversary commemorates the Battle of Lincoln Fair and the sealing of Charter of the Forest.

The famous battle at Lincoln Castle of May 1217 saw the English steal a decisive defeat of the French.

However, Lincoln people were loyal to the French and the city was sacked, and ‘Lincoln Fair’ describes the looting that took place after the victory.

The Charter of the Forest granted people rights to graze animals in woodlands.

Previously, forests could only be used for hunting by the king.Lincoln is the only place where the 1215 Magna Carta and 1217 Charter of the Forest can be seen side by side.

After the trail, the sculptures will be sold at auction to raise money towards a new homeless shelter for The Nomad Trust.

The facility will provide housing for 32 homeless people in 16 en-suite rooms, plus 40 self-contained open-plan apartments.
